Welcome to Greeley Main Street
Greeley’s establishment in 1870 is owed to the actions and ideals of founder Nathan Meeker. A supporter of Utopian idealism, Meeker called for settlers to join an experimental, planned community with parks, wide streets, schools, decorative homes and gardens, and abundant land for farming and pasture. Then called the Union Colony, today it is known as Greeley.
The historic character of the downtown area is a link to Greeley’s unique past as one of Colorado’s few successful colony settlements. It is also an important urban center servicing the surrounding agricultural area. Many of the original downtown buildings remain, preserving a sense of Greeley’s historic character. A Main Street community since 2001, Greeley is home to the University of Northern Colorado and boasts a lively arts and entertainment community at the center of downtown.
