Welcome to Lake City Main Street
Lake City was founded in 1875 as a supply center for the thousands of miners who flooded the San Juan Mountains. As the seat of Hinsdale County, Lake City boomed during the last quarter century, but due to a lack of rich mineral deposits and the silver crash of 1893, the mining industry dwindled until train service ended in 1932. After World War II, Lake City’s tourism industry blossomed and it became a summer destination for families who enjoyed fishing, hiking, hunting and the cool climate.
Today the timeless historic downtown and surrounding wilderness continue to attract year-round visitors. In 2005, Lake City became a Colorado Main Street community. With its small-town atmosphere, pedestrian-friendly downtown, interesting shops, and beautiful town park, this community continues to thrive as a hidden-gem destination for visitors in the know.
